Singaporean GirlThis time I present you pictures from the city state of Singapore. Singapore lies on some islands at the south end of the West Malaysian peninsular. I traveled there last summer together with a friend. It was the starting point to our trip to Malaysia. Because my friend arrived a few days before me in Singapore I only spent about three days in this unique city before we headed north across the bridge to Johor Baru in Malaysia, but that is another story, which will follow soon (hopefully).

MerlionThe first time I was in Singapore was on the way to Australia back in 1993. I had two hours between my flights to spend, so I decided to join the guy who sat beside me in the plane on his trip to downtown Singapore. I knew it's not much time but I decided to go instead to wait within the airport. First it wasn't that easy to find the way out of the airport and catching the right bus and I wasted a lot of time ... At the end it was just enough time to drive to the Orcard Road (or where ever) to catch the bus back to the airport without missing the plane for Sydney.

The cookSingapore is, I would say, very special for that region. When you compare it to other South East Asian cities it is very different. Of course skyscrapers rises into the sky in other cities too, that's not what makes the difference. The difference is the cleanliness (nearby) everywhere you go. The well organized structures, including the MRT, the Singaporean underground, which is absolutely perfect. You don't have to "mind the gap ... mind the gap ... mind the gap ..." like in the London Underground :)
SkyscrapersApart from that you still find an old Singapore, although it is going to be destroyed. An example for the old S'pore is the hotel we stayed, the "Mitre" Hotel! It was the lousiest hotel during the whole trip. But I guess once upon a time it was a great hotel... The good things were that our room was huge and we had our own bath. The bad things were that you only could sit down on your bed, the rest was to muddy and the bath tube was just for decoration, it hasn't seen water since years. The toilet was just a hole in the floor. No not like a usual Asian toilet, once there was a 'real' toilet but only the hole was left. And in one edge the ceiling was hanging down (probably by now, the ceiling is lying down on the floor ;-).
But after all it was quite interesting to stay in the same hotel with oil platform divers, prostitutes, ex prisoners and other suspect people.

Because I didn't spend that much time in Singapore I haven't got that much pictures :-( But I hope it gives you an idea about S'pore. In the first part, the Singaporean Skyscrapers, you can see some of those (of course!). For the second part, the Singaporean Impressions, I collected all the other pictures to present you on this page.

That should be enough for the moment, err, ... no, there is one more thing:

Have fun browsing through our Gallery.
